Hmm - sometimes sleep brings new ideas. This just popped up: does Dynamic DNS actually work with just a subdomain (i.e. main domain assigned - normally - to one address, subdomain assigned - with DynDNS - to another)??
- Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) repeated this.
-
@mk Oh yes, that's a pretty normal use case. Usually a normal DNS hosting provider will let you do this. Details depend on provider.
-
@clacke great! I'll see if my Domain registrar will do it, but I know Hurricane Electric support it (I'm using them for 'backup' DNS).
-
@clacke I just found out that you can also do a self-hosted Dynamic DNS from Linode: "Dynamic DNS Using The Linode API" https://travismaynard.com/writing/dynamic-dns-using-the-linode-api - a nice write-up that also explains how Dynamic DNS actually "works". Sweet! #networking #selfhosted #dynamicdns #dns #linode

I could set up the "local" cron job for this on the NAS, and have it automatically "switch over" when I move the box to Groningen; I should set up port forwarding on the router before the move so it would be seamless. :)

@mk "DynDNS recently ended their free services."
:-O
-
@mk "a self-hosted Dynamic DNS from Linode", rather, Linode-hosted. They're the DNS hoster. I thought you meant a DNS server in a VPS.
-
@mk Either way: Yay, problem solved!
-
@clacke @mk I think that was a while ago. I initially started off on DynDNS in 2010.
-
@bob @mk Yes, the article is two years old. DynDNS is just such a staple of internet life. It's the end of an era ... and their relevance.
-
@clacke that's what I thought at first as well ;-) I'm still new-ish to this stuff but I'm learning fast. So: Linode-hosted, self-defined. Or something like that. :D
