While pump.io never made great strides on its own (and was never part of the #Fediverse), its protocol ActivityPump formed the basis of ActivityPub that makes today's #Fediverse possible. So the pump.io significance shouldn't be understated.
Because the Fediverse uses chronological timelines, and because it has a worldwide audience, it is totally fine to boost your own post later so it can reach people in different time zones.
There's no algorithm deciding what people see in their main Fediverse timeline, so they just see whatever happens to be there when they are online.
@yarmo@EU_Commission New things are never easy, and they do require learning. They are eager to do so, though - but in such a big org getting new processes and priorities in place takes time. It is to be hoped that they follow the lead of companies like #DHL and move off of proprietary social media altogether in favour of the web and #fediverse - that would support privacy and free manpower.
So far, the @EU_Commission presence on the #fediverse has been hit/miss at best, and an absolute failure at worst.
They do not caption their images and most accounts are just mirrors of birdsite accounts. This means we don't receive most threads, just the posts announcing threads.
All in all, it's a slap in the face to those who value privacy and independence from US Big Tech, a half-hearted attempt that will thus be doomed to fail unless they make a true effort.
@aral as someone that got sucked into a well known tech company, because I believed in the "mission", I realize now how naive I was and how much they took advantage of my passion and absolutely burned me out over 6 years and paid me very little to kill myself. It's become very clear to me that they're all the same and the only way forward are independent projects and supporting them. Such as the #fediverse . #PeopleOverPlatforms#ProtocolsOverPlatforms
One is not the same as the other. Are there plans to indeed consider #ActivityPub here? I mean there's huge potential to bring such new domain / app type to the #Fediverse or interconnectivity AS/LDN vs. AS/AP are different approaches.
Uh I just got DMed by the COO of Tumblr asking about hiring contractors to make us fully #indieweb compliant, and possibly even #fediverse integration. Anyone out there looking for work?
@cy that is cynical take. Maybe warranted for some W3C open standards, idk, but the authors of #ActivityPub are fedizens that have spent blood, sweat and tears and countless hours volunteering for the community and the commons to help make the #Fediverse what it currently is.
It is now time for others to take over and bring the fedi to a higher level, building on what was established before. This is a problem as most people work on their own apps, less on making the ecosystem more accessible.
@natecull I'm not sure the name of the phenomenon, but we notice the more extreme ppl more often in these environments. I don't think we anticipated algorithms creating echo chambers. Back in the days of BBSs, phpbb, etc., ppl had to be reasonable. While perceived anonymity makes ppl worse (think of how drivers see cyclists as not human), there being no algorithm along with human moderation made for a better experience.
The #fediverse may be the closest we get to that nowadays.
Totally agree @dansup and your project efforts and steady updates are hugely appreciated!
Also, besides helping smaller projects with onboarding (which is too hard for newcomers), there's also work to do to take #Fediverse as a whole to the next level. Improved standards, clear best-practices, more seamless integrations, and new, different application types that interoperate together. Right now apps evolve, while there's the risk that fediverse stalls.
I've been pretty vocal about using my following and resources to help spread awareness of new projects and developers, I know what it's like to start from nothing and "compete" with mastodon, peertube, pleroma, etc.
What I don't get is how distant projects are from each other, I think the larger projects should make more of an effort to help out smaller projects.
We are not competing with each other, we're all in this together! 💪 #fediverse#activitypub
