Shari Vegas (sharivegas@sealion.club)'s status on Sunday, 25-Sep-2016 11:42:28 UTC Shari Vegas Something dawned on me.
GNUSocial won't scale. Protocol is mired in gross amounts of bureaucracy.
Fuck. Maybe it's time to fork it.- Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) repeated this.

The biggest problem for scaling GS at the moment is the awful performance of the current PHP implementation. Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) repeated this. -

Constance Variable (lambadalambda@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Sunday, 25-Sep-2016 16:23:07 UTC Constance Variable @clacke @sharivegas I'll believe it when it happens :). Diaspora barely supports Ostatus and lacks developers, GS isn't exactly evolving at break-neck speed either. I think Ostatus is really the protocol to standardize on / extend, because there's actually a sizeable amount of servers and compatible implementations. Constance Variable (lambadalambda@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Sunday, 25-Sep-2016 16:24:54 UTC Constance Variable @clacke @sharivegas I heard that it "doesn't scale", but why? It's not the most efficient protocol, but the current main implementation is dog slow. In conversation permalink Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) repeated this. -

lnxw48 (Linux Walt) (lnxw48@fresh.federati.net)'s status on Sunday, 25-Sep-2016 16:36:32 UTC lnxw48 (Linux Walt) Based on what he said at the time, he felt that it was too difficult to evolve #OStatus's component specs (mostly designed & controlled by Google) once Google decided that #federation and interoperability in the social space was no longer desirable (coincides with the launch of #GPlus). On top of that, his company was losing money (at one point, it was ad-supported, but users rebelled against the most lucrative ad provider, Google), and most SN users relied upon him for zero-price hosting.
