@andstatus Dunno if you hashed out what $USER was talking about yesterday about timelines and such. But I would prefer DMs not be in main TL
-
@johnnynull Thank you for suggestion. I thought about this, but nobody asked this so far, as I remember. And I personally get Direct / Private messages very rarely :-)
"Don't include Direct messages in a Home timeline"
Should this be an option or just a behavior change?
-
@andstatus You're welcome. I personally value giving others choice, so given the choice, option would anger the fewest people. ;^)
-
@andstatus Unless having it as an option would create a larger workload for the devs, should point out.
-
@johnnynull I didn't even know DMs workd with AndStatus. In fact, that's why I installed the official Twitter client.

@roland Actually I don't like to see "Direct" as a separate timeline: this is really just a filter for messages, where I'm in a "To" field (i.e. one of message recipients, not necessarily the only one).
Separation between Public and Private (non - Public) messages is far more important, but we don't have this separation in AndStatus UI yet. Read on this in https://github.com/andstatus/andstatus/issues/95 and related tickets.
Maybe "Private" timeline, separated from Home timeline, is what should be implemented instead. And "Show non-public messages in Home timeline" option (defaulted to "yes" to preserve current behavior).
?!
Actually, this will also mean that Direct messages will not be shown in the Home timeline :-) (They willbe in the Private timeline)

@andstatus @roland I dig it!

@andstatus Direct messages aren't part of the home timeline. They're meant to be private/hidden, so shouldn't be in the context of public posts. Is what I think. :)
(assuming there's some other kind of notification of there being new DMs of course)

However reading your answer on https://loadaverage.org/notice/7461190 I think I might be misinterpreting what you mean with "direct message".
-
@mmn In any email application and in Pump.io also there is a notion of an Inbox. The Inbox (close to Home in GNU Social...) holds all messages, which the server-side system ("Social network") thinks should be delivered to the User. It's a client configuration matter, if this Inbox/Home is presented as one stream or some messages should be filtered out into another stream/folder/timeline...
I mean, nothing is set in stone...

@andstatus If there's a privacy indication on private ("direct") messages in the timeline I don't have any objections anyway. :]
