Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Monday, 03-Jan-2022 17:56:48 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π Is 32 bits supported in 20.04? -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Monday, 03-Jan-2022 18:01:10 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π This 32-bit 1 GiB Core Duo machine running Ubuntu 14.04 is snappier by far than the 64-bit 4 GiB AMD E1 machine on Ubuntu 20.04 at home. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Monday, 03-Jan-2022 18:10:21 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π / is 35 GiB, it has Ubuntu and Nix and Guix and it has 0 bytes free. I'm glad it was kind enough to boot. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Monday, 03-Jan-2022 18:14:37 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π @bkhl Yeah.
Actually my original plan was Guix System or NixOS, but I waited too long so now I'm short on time and need to aim for minimally invasive surgery.
I'll try to free some space and then see how far I get upgrading to one LTS after another. -

Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Monday, 03-Jan-2022 18:57:03 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π Oh! Actually the VG has free space. Thank you, past me! -
BjΓΆrn LindstrΓΆm (bkhl@mastodon.sdf.org)'s status on Monday, 03-Jan-2022 18:57:04 UTC BjΓΆrn LindstrΓΆm @clacke maybe you can do it that way and start removing conflicting packages once you get past 18.04. Though you'll probably still need to switch desktop if you were using the default (Gnome) Ubuntu desktop.

Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Monday, 03-Jan-2022 18:57:04 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π It's XFCE already. Gnome was a bit heavy for 1 GiB already back in 2014 or even earlier. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2022 15:30:14 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π do-release-upgrade worked from trusty/14 -> xenial/16 -> bionic/18 with quite a bit of manual adjustments each step to help everything install without conflicts.
focal do-release-upgrade got some signature error, but it could be that it just failed to download due to lack of i386 support. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2022 15:33:01 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π So now I added sources for focal and just apt upgraded things. There is only partial binary support for i386, so I'm locally running builds for e.g. python3-simplejson and python3-cffi-backend.
Also building guile 3 from source so I can build latest guix. -

Michel Salim :fedora: :centos: (michel_slm@floss.social)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2022 15:36:16 UTC Michel Salim :fedora: :centos: @clacke on that note... I'm going to check out Enlightenment.org tomorrow. Looks nice and light weight, and packaged in most Linux distros already.
Plus I'm nostalgic, haven't run it in 20 years
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π likes this. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2022 15:39:05 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π nooo cffi-backend has test failures. So that's why no binaries. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2022 15:54:12 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π `guild compile` will print "still going" if it didn't output any text for several minutes. I wonder how many people get to see that. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2022 15:59:39 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π pypi has cp38-manylinux1-i686 wheels for cffi 1.14.0 and other versions. Ubuntu-specific failures? Does upstream run when before building i686? -

Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Tuesday, 04-Jan-2022 16:06:36 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π Oh but oldstable is too old and stable is too new, so can't drop them into ubuntu even if it would otherwise work. -
