   Cannot, for the life of me, get Telepathy or Kopete to talk to my XMPP (OpenFire) server. Pidgin? No problem. Xabber? No problem. Spark? No problem (of course, that one is cheating). But KDE IM programs? PROBLEM. Any advice?

     I don’t use either (dislike them intensely, even though I prefer #KDE overall), but I’d start by looking at #SSL / #TLS and data compression settings. !XMPP

     Based on advice I have gotten on GNU Social and Pump.io, the problem appears to boil down to "Telepathy + self-signed cert" = fail. Sad. There was a technical reason I was not using my site cert for this server, and now I'll have to solve that to sort this out. Sigh. Trade one failure for another...

     OpenFire inherits all the suckiness of Java SSL too, so there's a bunch of problems you probably haven't experienced yet. My suggestion, along with biased @zash, is migrating to #prosody ;)

     @bobjonkman don't you use a self-signed cert for your XMPP server? Have you experienced any problems like @steve above?

     You got a weird cert, it has:
     xmppAddr: *.hefty
     ... that's not even a valid xmpp identifier

     @mmn @Steve Yes, and yes. Didn't realize Telepathy's behaviour was by design. I just use Pidgin everywhere now !XMPP

     @steve I finally resolved the OpenFire problem late last night. It boiled down to a config error during setup. The server name was set to something other than cooleysekula.net. I reinstalled openfire, fixed that 1 problem, and after that everything basically worked.

     I find it slightly weird that things would even look at the names in self-signed certs.
