Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:06:01 UTC Hallå Kitteh @kaniini What does run on your phone? I'm so out of everything, Lineage is all I know about. I tried OmniROM a few years back, and that was alright for that phone, but it crashes sometimes. -

Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:07:47 UTC Hallå Kitteh @ckeen @kaniini Ugh. Yes. Like why are you pushing porn in my face when you could have just put this on gitlab. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:08:30 UTC Hallå Kitteh @alfred @ckeen @kaniini It's clearly a question asked by someone who is not currently running Linux, so it shouldn't be annoying. Of course they need to know, and you should just have a couple of standard answers for them and be happy that someone is making the journey. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:09:55 UTC Hallå Kitteh @kaniini Yeah, that's what I do but I seriously need to replace it. The card reader stopped working so now all those Samsung and Google apps are a real problem in terms of space. I use Launcher2 or Launcher3 or whatever off F-Droid, which I guess is some old AOSP launcher? -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:14:19 UTC Hallå Kitteh My tablet started showing European football cup results in the notifications and I don't know where they are coming from or how to turn them off. I do not care who Arsenal played or if they won. That's a 7" Lenovo Elements or Essentials or something.
And another family member is worried that her Android might be too old, but her semi-unknown Chinese brand phone isn't even supported on XDA.
Maybe I should just pay twice as much for everything and buy it from ThinkPenguin or something. Everything is trash. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:18:06 UTC Hallå Kitteh @bob @kaniini I've tried that but it's really hard to cross-reference what's in that catalog with what's in the shop and in the end you will still end up buying something you thought was supported but then it turns out that the one you bought has a Rev 3 Boogajimba chip and only Rev 2 will ever be supported by free software, because the Rev 3 was involved in some weird IP settlement and had to be pulled from the market and also it has a weird hardware quirk that only ever some small proprietary company figured out how to work around.
Sorry for being such a drag but it was so much easier to buy phones and computers like ten years ago. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:20:29 UTC Hallå Kitteh @dwmatiz @kaniini Yes, just having root solves most of it, without having to much with bootloaders. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:21:08 UTC Hallå Kitteh @kaniini @dwmatiz When the appliance starts interfering with my ability to use it the way I want, it matters. I don't want to buy a new phone when the old one physically works. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:23:07 UTC Hallå Kitteh @pea @dwmatiz @kaniini In theory yes, but I don't really see that in practice. And if you flash an entirely new firmware on there, you're just making the phone weirder and possibly removing it from the population of mass-pwnable devices. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:24:01 UTC Hallå Kitteh @kaniini @bob When not playing means throwing away shit that technically works, I have an issue with not playing. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Friday, 13-Apr-2018 07:58:00 UTC Hallå Kitteh @bob @kaniini Part of it may not be time, but that maybe it's easier to find the things I want in Sweden rather than in Hong Kong. The markets work in pretty different ways. The Swedish market is still pretty strong in early-adopter and tech-interested consumers, but the HK market is utterly dominated by competition on price and bullet-point features.
