The “Old School” setting was added to #StatusNet software was to appease unhappy users by giving us back our hierarchical tree conversations.
The attached screencap displays what a hierarchical tree conversation I can have looks like when using the pre-GNUsocial StatusNet software set like this:

I’ve just learned GNUsocial’s Old School Setting does not have this functionality:

I understand you folks are hackers, but as a user I can tell you the point of social media is to socialize which is why conversation is key. Without this important feature, replacing my StatusNet software with GNUsocial software would be a downgrade. Surely that is not your intent. I very much hope you plan to restore this, and in truth it ought to be the default.
If GNUsocial aspires to being the premier social media software, helping users to communicate clearly and effectively is key.
