@ddeimeke I agree to some extend, but I think some of your arguments are to negative. GPG: yes, the web-of-trust is complicated. But I would argue that many people can just ignore it. For them it is simply "secure enough" to just encrypt the mail. How many people verify Signal fingerprints for Example? Almost nobody. And this is fine. IRC: there are Web services and clients (for desktop and mobile) which make IRC really easy and nice to work with. I never used Slack, but I talks to people who use it and saw some video tutorial. For me it is still not more than a nice user interface for stuff you can also do with IRC. At Nextcloud for example we decided to stick to IRC, Discourse and XMPP (internally) by purpose and I'm happy and proud that we took this decision.
@benediktg there was even a time where you could connect to the Facebook chat with any XMPP client, no plugins or anything else was needed. In general there was a time-frame where XMPP was a real widely used standard (Facebook, Google, gmx, Web.de,...), sadly we missed the opportunity to preserve it. :(
My quote of the day: "True open source solutions can offer the best feature, performance and value for most companies, but unfortunately there are so few pure open source companies providing them. I applaud Nextcloud and look forward to working with them for years to come." !Nextcloud !FOSS
@jookia @clacke as far as I know GNU doesn't require a CLA for all GNU Projects. Therefore I wonder why they doesn't simply drop the CLA without leaving GNU?
@bob yes, sadly completely free distribution as defined by FSFE struggle to have enough contributors. But in general I don't think it is correct to describe Free Software as something which is mostly done by hobbyists in their spare time. The Boston Consulting Group concluded already 2002 that about 40% of all Free Software is developed by paid developers as part of their primary job. (https://io.schiessle.org/url/18753) A study 2013 already come to the conclusion that about 50% of all Free Software development has been paid work. (https://io.schiessle.org/url/15600)
