Review: The Road Presents Itself:
The Road presents itself is a gripping historical mystery. It’s also a pitch perfect evocation of a noir detective story. I can only hope this is the first of a series of stories told by the wry, weary, & wily Tiberius.

I’ll admit I was apprehensive about how the modern noir narrative style would mesh with a Roman period story. I needn’t have worried. Tiberius’ voice is true – to himself, to the genre, and most importantly to the story. Phillips also seamlessly weaves authentic details of Roman life into the story. These are Roman characters with Roman motives and problems. This first novel works as a detective story, as historical fiction, and as a novel. For me it brings to mind what was best about I, Claudius and Sword in the Stone. In those novels, Graves and White recreated authentic worlds distant from our own filled with characters we could identify with. Phillips has done the same.
