We're coming to the end of the second decade of the 21st century and to the middle of the third decade of the internet being a going concern in the life of the average person.

On average, people spend more than three hours a day on the internet.

The claim that internet-based activism is invalid and that "you have to go into the real world to make a difference" has never been more wrong, and at this point making it reveals that you're deeply out of touch.

Suggestion: when you're building a user database, assign each user a 16-digit hexadecimal number as a unique identifier, disallow that internal identifier from changing, and let everything else change.

Want to change your username? Great. Want to change your email? Fine. The unique hex ID is all that matters.

16 hex digits is enough collision space to give every person on earth about 2.5 /million/ accounts on your system, but short enough that you can write it down on a post-it note.

Broadening a thought: We'd be better off if we stopped talking about "the internet of things" and started talking about "computers don't always look like we expect them to".

Instead of saying "internet-enabled" it might be wise to say "regardless of what it looks like, that's a computer and you should treat it like one".

"Somebody hacked my fridge!" Yes, your fridge has a computer built into it and you should treat it like a computer (and demand that the manufacturer treat it like one).

TIL about the Cagots, a group of people in France and Spain who experienced systemic hatred and discrimination because... they were Cagots.

They weren't any different from the other people living near them - same skin and hair color, same language, same religion, etc. - but if you were born to a Cagot family, you were a Cagot, and the rest of the people hated and shunned you. And nobody nowadays knows why; the origins of the discrimination have been lost to time.
