They all had crappy episodes.

TOS had the lion's share, IMO, because it was from television's silver age and was trying to get better than that. TNG was trying to grow from those roots into something better (and, IMO, did so -- very few total crap episodes, almost no Spock's Brains at all, really).

Television's evolution left subarc formation for DS9 and VOY to handle (and they did okay, for the most part).

Between watching a random DS9 and a random VOY episode, I'd be torn.

maybe we as a species need to move past the idea that some of what was "good" ten or twenty or thirty or forty years ago

is still "good" now

good is a moving target, quality changes

Dickens is impenetrably dense and unrealistically plot-convenient now

is it "good"? uh, a hundredsomething years back, sure, it was fuckin' fantastic

The problem isn't complexity, IMO.

I mean ink and paper are actually shockingly complex things, but the 'interface' of 'writing on paper' has been relatively standardized in the collective human mind at this point -- but that's still pretty recent. The evolution of pens, of water-soluble ink, of papers made with varying materials and thicknesses and purposes, etc. It took a long damn time.

So computer interface use may not be 'standardized' for a much longer while yet. :\
