Coco (lain@pleroma.soykaf.com)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 12:11:25 UTC Coco @cwebber @karen I think there's also the problem that the most popular "OOP" language is probably java, which isn't a very good example of the OOP that Smalltalk or Ruby do (with object/actors sending each other messages). -

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 12:11:04 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber @karen Yeah, I figured you were joking, though it's something I do worry about.
There is at least one institution that wants to rename ocaps (object capabilities) to zcaps (authorization capabilities) to make things clearer. Unfortunately that completely disconnects ocaps from their history, which makes performing research on them much harder, so I am not in favor of it.

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 11:59:48 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber I wish fediverse clients had a working petname based contact list type system so I could write down notes about people and give them my own names so I can actually contextually remember who they are
Especially a big problem after APConf, where now I just followed a bunch of people I really cared about the conversations of, and will have a hard time mentally mapping them to their online identities :(

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 11:58:33 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber @karen Nonetheless, I agree that targeting "object oriented programming" as a way to make audiences feel like the ideas are familiar is actually probably not as great an approach as it was, marketing-wise, a decade ago. And if ocaps aren't specific to what people *think of* as OOP, then that's adding confusion.

Coco (lain@pleroma.soykaf.com)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 11:48:27 UTC Coco @cwebber I'm really happy this conference gave us space to talk about these new concepts in more detail. Also, it was a lot of fun :) -
Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 11:36:47 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber @karen But the real question is, what is an object? http://www.mumble.net/~jar/articles/oo.html
MarkM's definition is closer to what you already do, because Mark's definition is closer to Alan Kay / the actor model type directions. But what "object oriented" means is very vague.
At any rate, ocaps and functional programming can go along great, see http://mumble.net/~jar/pubs/secureos/secureos.html

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 09:32:33 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber A lot of people were talking like there was an implicit assumption that there will be another #APConf. There could be, but it's clear that the community needs to spread out the organization of the next one. Probably FOSDEM dev room is a good start and the right thing for 2020; going forward, maybe another APConf would be good (I think structurally the format was very nice).
It's clear just how much we got done by meeting face to face. Let's make sure we don't lose that.

Yes, this is my answer to make ocaps essentially as good as ACLs at preventing delegation. We know it's impossible to prove but in most cases people aren't asking for provable security. Comparing boarding pass to passport is enough. -

special
#thankyou to @mlemweb because it was just utter fun to work with here and to both [ also to Her Majesty @cwebber ] for being friends and therefore also to @emacsen and @how and you know. And to @markm , all volunteers, talkers and

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 09:25:47 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber @karen That's a really good idea though!
This raises an interesting point; the unconference clearly turned out to be hugely valuable at APConf. I'm not sure if we could replicate that at FOSDEM though (the venue makes that hard), but an idea to throw at the organizers (such as @how )

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 09:22:20 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber @karen Manu *is* super cool... super charismatic and yet super technically competent, a rare combination. He (and Digital Bazaar) cares about this space and have been watching it actively for a long time. DB's projects all involve increasing personal autonomy and inter-personal collaboration, especially through identity concerns, and to that end understands that decentralized social networks are at the heart of such things working moving into the future.
