3) Instance managers should absolutely be held to a higher standard than other users. A manager accepts responsibility to take care of users and intercede on their behalf and keep the software in a good state and keep them informed on management decisions.

Before the new user explosion, we were running up GNU Social and postActiv server error logs into the tens of gigabytes with malformed message errors, from messages Mastodon servers sent.

I know Gargron isn't on the best of terms with many GS people, but if community volunteers would step up and look at these issues, it'd make all of us better citizens of the Fediverse.

If you're scared of new users diluting the culture of mastodon.social there are two things you can do:

1) make sure that other instances get used as points-of-entry for the fediverse -- hell maybe even the twitter ads could point at other sites

2) export the culture to your own instances! There's no reason we can't have another gay trans furry communist instance or two.

We don't have a "this is how federation works" prompt for new users during the registration process. We need that. We could also explain that mastodon.social has some instances blocked and that they'll be visible, or you can block more instances, if you go to another instance or start your own.
