When I was in high school, I knew a guy that decided to learn some acrobatics when he was about ten. He started by trying to jump, spin all the way around head over heels, and land on his feet in the same spot. By the time I met him, he was about five years into it, and he could do amazing stunts like you'd expect from a circus performer.

He had, of course, broken a few bones along the way. His younger brother did not do any of those tricks.

It is amazing what people can do when they set their minds to the task.

When #sonOne was about 12, he decided to learn to throw knives. He took a knife his grandfather had given him and spent about an hour a day in the garage, throwing the knife at the wall. By the time his mom figured out why there were so many holes in the wall, he was pretty good at hitting a target tip-first at that distance.

A year or so later, he taught himself to throw pennies, spinning so fast they buzzed and curved. This time he practiced in his bedroom. By the time I realized what was going on, he could hit a target and punch though drywall or hollow doors.

When people are persistent enough, they can do surprising things.

@fu From experience, mlb.tv blocks many #VPN Ip addresses. Most recent experience is with Mullvad from a hotel network ... could not view via VPN, and the hotel was doing screwy things so that streaming wasn't working without VPN.

I can see some use for a metaverse ( after all, several years ago, many teens and twenty-somethings were clamoring about an early version of the metaverse, #Second_Life ). I just don't think at this point that a single vendor's platform (and remember, they also own #Oculus, the company that makes their 3D goggles) is able to get enough mindshare ... and as far as I know, MFB's version doesn't interact with competing platforms.

I suspect that's because there's a major investment needed, and internal bean-counters won't approve it if there's not a mandate, because (among other things), there aren't charging stations, trained staff at dealership repair centers, aftermarket parts & equipment widely available to support such vehicles.

This isn't insurmountable, of course, but they have always had a xenophobic bent. So inviting workers and / or settlers in from the global south is unlikely.

Turns out my training time last month never got fully entered, so two pay periods later, I still did not get paid. I sent an e-mail to someone in HQ about it. I think it has to get done before FY2024 begins 2023-10-01.
