I found that the character limitation of 140 simply makes me stupid, made me sloganeering and broadcasting. With about 1000 characters I can give a thought the length it sometimes need.
re: keeping the long stuff. I train myself in letting thought and ideas go. No hoarding, no compulsive thinking about whether it’s something I shgould spare for a blog post.
In a sense it’s like the preoccupation w/ Alzheimers, the fear of forgetting. Which seems to me rather a form of greed, wanting to keep everything close to oneself — even oneself —instead of giving things away.

simsa0 (simsa0@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Sunday, 08-Feb-2015 22:47:53 UTC simsa0 The hierarchical threading had been one interesting feature, but was itself prone to quickly become as confusing as the stream mode: The indenting of each and every reply made for long strings one had to scrutinize carefully in order to find the dent the reply replied to. Helpful in short conversations but confusing in larger ones. (A combination of both might actually help ease the problem, putting notes into a stream line as long as there is no further reply indenting the conv to the right).
But a main conundrum for GNU Social is: In implementing more and more the features people are accustomed to on Twitter, the less it becomes reasonable to leave Twitter for GNU Social. This could only be avoided if GNU Social would come up w/ a good solution for displaying conversations -- something that hasn't been achieved by Twitter or Free Media. -
simsa0 (simsa0@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Sunday, 08-Feb-2015 20:42:51 UTC simsa0 Due to federation: basic functionalities people are accustomed to from Twitter don't work or are difficult to use (remote block, remote reply, remote fav & repeat).
Due to architecture the user has to learn a lot before he can do basic stuff. This is true even if he stays in his "home"-instance and mimicks the silo communication of Twitter.
For a new user the advantages of federation are negligible, its disadvantages are tiresome.
GNU Social (and federation in general) is for people who share some basic concvictions (copyright, owning one's data, freedom from commercial pressure and ads, etc.) None of that is of major interest for most new users.
So, to use (or learn to use) GNU Social & federation just for idealogical reasons is simply not worth the effort. OTOH, GNU Social & federation don't provide additional functionalities that could differentiate them positively from Twitter.

simsa0 (simsa0@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Saturday, 31-Jan-2015 21:08:33 UTC simsa0 This is interesting! You conceive of the growth of the federation in terms of the number of servers/nodes involved (and whether it increases). I see it primarily in the number of people using such nodes and the number of (mutual) followings that thusly interconnect the servers/nodes. Your take spreads federation outwards, mine rather inwards. -

simsa0 (simsa0@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Wednesday, 07-Jan-2015 18:55:27 UTC simsa0 I still miss the hierarchical tread-display I was accustomed to on old identica. It was the main reason I stayed there; only later did I add twitter to the serviceses I use.
But I think the main problem of both, twitter and its alternatives, is that they can’t display conversations clearly and comfortably. If both areas share the same disadvantage, then why use something else than twitter (which indeed for many has advantages over its alternatives)?
I guess beside federation a new way of presenting / displaying conversations would be the feature that would convince many to use twitter-alternatives.
If a conversation-thread could be created that orientates itself a bit toward the simultaneity of posting possible in IRC or etherpad, that would be a start, IMO.
