@clacke Minix3 requires at least a 586 processor and 32MB of RAM, so notably heavier and unable to run on @rubenerd's 486 in this case.

Additionally, a lot of modern hardware (NICs/Wifi and USB) aren't supported by any version, preventing more modern hardware from being as useful as older hardware. But minix2 (or possibly OS/2) on that hardware could be a pretty reasonable experience.

@mike @rubenerd One would hope that's not the issue, but it may depend on RAM. However, I have run Minix on a 286 with 640k of RAM, and the older 1.x series ran from dual floppies on 808x hardware with even less RAM.
@rubenerd If you strike out with NetBSD, you might have modest luck with Minix (1.x & 2.x ran quite nicely on such hardware)
