Unfortunately, according to IRC, it doesn't work well with mainline #ssb because of node JSON peculiarities. Type the wrong emoji and other nodes start rejecting your feed. :-(
In my Copious Spare Time, I will make an OStatus/ActivityPub bridge, including general web bridge. Right after I finish my other vaporware project. Right after I learn all the OStatus ropes by digging into #pleroma.
I checked out the Pleroma repo 4 months ago. That's a start.
@cwebber Overall, I agree with your take. It's definitely possible to incrementally move toward the glorious distributed future, and doing it that way helps bring the installed base along. Meanwhile, pioneering systems like #Hubzilla and #ssb can explore what that future should look like.
> Personally, I think the State theory of money needs to get more airtime.
Sounds like they're all true to me. Money is unlikely to have emerged once.
The System of the World[0] presents the original UK currency and Mexican Silver Dollars as mainly or purely Marginal-Utility-Metallism and money in southern France as mainly Chartered-Credit/Debt. The USD world reserve currency today seems to me mainly to be Regression Metallism, and the HKD is State-Chartered and Trust-Minimization-Metallism, Chartered-Credit/Debt, as well as Information.
Cryptocurrencies are pretty extreme on Regression-Metallism and Information.
Would be great to hear someone who knows stuff about stuff comment on this.
> Basically I'm running a real node.js process in the background, which runs full scuttlebot (leveldown swapped for memdown, sodium is fully in JS, but fs and net and dgram and all the rest are the real shit) and the react native app uses ssb-client to communicate to that, and things... work.
@lxoliva I like the #ssb software and I like the community.
There have been several influxes of people who are interested in coops, community organizing, cultural freedom and individual empowerment, so it's as much a social network about making social networks as it was when I joined only a few months ago.
I would be there more if there were a mobile client. It's on the way. Also it's a mild annoyance that identity is tied to instance.
As far as I'm concerned, the killer app is #gitssb. The most important thing to do about ssb right now would be to provide better public gitssb bridges.
@maiyannah @cwebber As an example, SSB is developed on #SSB because there's #gitssb. I don't think waiting for git-OStatus or git-ActivityPub to emerge before developing ActivityPub is a good idea, and neither is staying away from the current tools of the trade for the sake of it.
Of course, there's more than one person involved who thinks using github rather than Free project hosting software is problematic, but there are many contradicting forces leading to that decision, and it's hardly unique for the Free world.
AP or OStatus support in #gitlab or #gitea would be really cool though.
@xj9 @matteodem There is a project in active use today on #ssb, SSB itself is being developed withing that system.
Just `npm install -g git-ssb` if you're already on SSB, and you can access your own git host on http://localhost:7718/ with just `git ssb web` (Patchwork or sbot needs to be running), you can clone ssb:// repos, and you can create your own with `git ssb create` in your own repo.
Public gateways are available. Example, git-ssb itself:
Gateways are pretty choked these days though, so for reliable access you should be following the repo author or their friend on SSB and access the repo through your own git-ssb.
