#GS3 has started asking questions about fighting, including fighting with weapons like knives and guns. #sonTwo says he's been explaining that we try to solve problems with words, so no one gets hurt.

#sonTwo had some work-related training today, so I did not get to #videochat with grandsons ( #GS3, #GS4, #GS5 ).
I did attempt to call with #sonOne's youngest daughter ( #GD2 ), but network issues prevented the connection.
#Daddy_A's oldest, #A1, hasn't had service for his phone in so long that he'll probably have a new number if and when they reactivate it.

Talking with #sonTwo about the kids. There’s now a telescope, so even though 4 1/2 year old #GS3 is really too young for it, they can occasionally have an evening observation. He likes space, stars and planets, the moon, and weather. I asked whether 2 1/2 year old #GS4 has started expressing his own preferences yet. The answer is he currently likes what his older brother likes, but he’s less emotionally invested in those topics.
The exception is TV. GS3 likes “Bluey” and GS4 only likes “Octonauts”. And colors: GS3 likes blue and GS4 likes red. #GS5, at age 1 hasn’t shown any preference yet, but I’ve been looking for clothing in green for now.

In light of the recent massacre, I've had time to think about guns again. The last time I touched a firearm was when I was around 14 and an adult gang member came barging into the family home. I picked up the family pistol and pointed it at him. He realized that I really would shoot him if he did not retreat. He backed out of the door and exited the property.
After the fact, I determined that I did not want to deal with the after-incident emotions related to possibly killing someone. (I should note that the gang member didn't learn from this experience. He tried again at least twice. One of my brothers likewise grabbed the gun and sent the guy fleeing both times.)
Many decades later, there's no "let $BROTHER handle it". If a situation arose in which an intruder threatened my family members' lives, it would be up to me. I've been ready for years, but yesterday I decided to take some actions to prepare.
Both #sonOne and #sonTwo were once shooting instructors. It sounds like they're planning to put me through the training, then buy me a weapon.

Interesting discussion going on with #sonTwo. What should band members do when a member of a Christian music group decides they no longer believe in God?
Do they kick the person out? Do they continue as they have been? What is the reasoning for whatever choices they make?
As usual, we're coming at it from different perspectives (different from each other as well as different from where I think we each would have come from a few years earlier).

I still remember the birthday of a kid that #sonTwo hasn't hung out with since middle school. Happy 36th birthday, Patrick.

Video from #sonTwo: #GS3 holding a little pumpkin and saying "I wish you were here, Grandpa!" followed by #GS4 saying "I miss you, Grandpa!".
His speech is growing nicely. For a while, I couldn't see any changes, but recently, he's having conversations.

#sonTwo bought me a subscription to mlb.tv for the regular season, but I have not watched a single game. Every time I want to, I get the regional blackout.
That sort of makes mlb.tv useless. I don’t have cable and there’s no over the air broadcasters carrying MLB games here.

@clacke I think experience and observation is the difference. When my nephew #Honshu was much younger, he was subscribed to an online music service. One month, my sister couldn't pay the Internet bill, and the service's local client very quickly shut off access to his downloaded music files when it could not check to see if he was allowed to listen.
Lesson learned: buy your music on CDs and rip them to put on your player devices. With no #DRM / #TUR, the files will work even without a subscription.
Likewise, I bought a version of the Sony #PSP for #sonTwo ... the one that used a digital download format for all games. In under a year, he'd lost access to all his games. I went to GameStop and bought a used PSP (the old style with the physical media) and he was able to play for years.
DRM == "Digital Rights Management", a euphemism for TUR. TUR == "Technical Use Restrictions". TUR is meant to restrict and prevent use except in limited and pre-approved circumstances.

I'm just remembering that when #sonTwo was in elementary school, his best friend and about five other kids from their grade at school had their birthdays within a period of about one week. We usually had 2-3 kids in a joint birthday party (on a Saturday) and then 2-3 others in a joint party the next week. One boy always had his separate, possibly because most of his family were Spanish speakers.

@clacke It didn't seem to last long. #sonTwo's former best friend loved that show (to the point that I think there was a Beetleborgs themed birthday party one year), so I saw it a few times.

#GS3 called me this morning to tell me about the derecho ("land hurricane") that blew down trees and powerlines in SE #Kansas, SW #Missouri, and NW #Arkansas.
They have some trees down in their yard, so #sonTwo will have to buy or rent a chainsaw. The fence is still up, and the animals (dogs, cats, chickens) are all okay.
Apparently, the power is back on for them. I did see that not everyone in the area has power yet.
-
Power outage in SW #MO since 02:00 US-Central. #sonTwo expects their refrigerated food to be ruined.

Great #videochat with #GS3, #GS4, and briefly #GS5. We talked about their books that I'm reading for them. Also about their outing yesterday ... the family went for a drive ... #sonTwo didn't say that they stopped anywhere, either. Usually, such trips end up with a stop at a city park if the weather is okay.

Today, a woman ran a red light and was about to run me down as I crossed in the crosswalk in accordance with the traffic lights (including the walk sign) when she suddenly saw me and stopped. At that speed, there would have been some damage.
I mentioned it in today's call with #sonTwo. Says he: "Right now, there's no money, so we would not have been able to fly out for either a hospital visit or a funeral."

Watches. Each son stopped wearing watches when he got a smartphone. Then each went back to wearing a watch once they had the experience of the phone dying and being late to work because of not knowing the time.
They're all currently wearing Apple smartwatches, but #sonOne also has a Samsung smartwatch and #sonTwo has a cheap Walmart watch.

When I had that conversation, #sonTwo mentioned that he didn't think #SnapChat was as popular as it once was. I'd seen someone online making the same claim earlier today. The only person I know who used it is my nephew #Papaya, but he's in another state, so I don't even know whether he still uses it.
But that's why they invented search engines, right? I asked #DuckDuckGo "is SnapChat still popular?" and #DDG led me to https://www.makeuseof.com/is-snapchat-still-popular/ (published 2023-02-09, so still current)
> Snapchat has always had a reputation for being an app for teens or young people, so it has always struggled to keep an older audience. Only 3.7% of Snapchat users are over 50. The heavy lean towards younger people may be why Snapchat has had trouble staying relevant over its history. People over 24 may feel like most of their peers don’t use the app anymore, so it is less popular.
and
> As of the third quarter of 2022, Snapchat has 363 million daily active users, according to Statista. This puts it in a similar region to Twitter. It is also the highest number of daily active users reported on Snapchat for the entire survey period spanning back to 2014.

#sonTwo is in a course about "social network marketing" with the potential to lead to a new career as a social network marketing manager / social network community manager. He said that the course talks about #SnapChat and #TikTok and he'll probably have to get accounts on these and other services as part of the course.
He also said that he looked into #Threads, but if he creates a Threads account and then closes it for any reason, it would also close the associated #Instagram account. Naturally, since Threads is so new, there won't be any specific content about it.
I suppose that it probably depends on the audience that the employer is targeting. I'm sure there are some SNM folks managing communities on extreme left-wing or extreme right-wing sites also.

I missed three attempts by #sonTwo to videochat this evening. Likely, the grandsons had something to tell me.
I also have something to tell the 2 year old #GS4. I bought the newest installment of his favorite book series ("I need a new butt") and will be sending it whenever the next shipment goes out.)
Oh, and they sent a picture of my bedroom there. All the spare baby stuff is cleared out, so it looks like a regular bedroom.

I bought us all Sony #PlayStation #PS4 and #Nintendo #Switch consoles years back. (Myself, #sonOne, #sonTwo, #Daddy_A). Additionally, I bought #A1, #GD1, #GD2 each their own Nintendo #2DS handhelds (and 2nd son sonTwo and I each got a #3DS handheld).
Part of the plan was that we'd all play together and thereby increase our time spent together and our communication, but that never happened, so I stopped buying consoles.
