*sigh* I still haven't figured out just how the #NAS manages to limit SSH login to root and admin; the sshd_config file has the usual command to allow root - but nothing about allowing another user or denying other users - yet ssh does reject another user login but not admin ??? #confuzzled #imustbemissingsomething #damnedright

@lnxw48 but doesn't that depend on how the start/stop/restart/etc script is written? I'm not sure I can actually change that since this is not a full serer but a #NAS box.

embarking on writing my first 'real' bash script - learning by example: I know exactly *what* I want to do and search for example snippets that help me write it down ;-) #learning #NAS

been soaking up information and now I (unavoidably) feel sleepy again; will resort to an energy drink and half an hour in my #hammock to let my brain fully absorb the info :) #NAS

@mk System actually has longer lines that scroll but if I use something longer it just truncates. Still, a nice feature! #NAS
-
oh, nice - you can write text to/on the #NAS's LCD panel (only on the AS-604T); that would be great as a non-destructive testing and debugging tool to use from scripts! e.g. does my script actually run at boot time? just look at the panel :) then add real functionality.

got distracted by finding howtos for #ownCloud (in #NAS) and links to #Android apps - just browsing & bookmarking for now, but useful!
-
@mk found another hint: it seems the whole /etc gets replaced on reboot (just what I suspected - and actually a good thing: if you mess up, at least a reboot will restore it to a usable system!). but I already found you can use a "local" etc directory. #NAS

@mk hehe, another page I just found starts with "One of my problems on Asustor ADM is to find files." (that's why I have been poking aruond for days now to figure out what's where and how it works!); this page has a useful list of 'what's where': http://amigotechnotes.wordpress.com/2014/02/21/asustor-adm-configuration-and-executable-files/ #NAS

!linux does anyone know how to list *connected* (not yet mounted) devices and include the volume label? most suggestions I've seen are not available because the #NAS uses busybox (no e2label, no mount -l); surely the information must be available somehow?
-
@mk well, dammit, on reboot it mounts the thumb right back on /volume1/USB1 instead of what I specify in fstab :( well - duh - that is because on restart the #NAS *creates a new fstab* which doesn't have my extensions any more! !grrr
-
@mk I am, of course, speaking of my #NAS here - for Debian on Nikola this isn't a problem... Also, on the #NAS there doesn't seem to be an udev implementation, so I'll *have* to use fstab (which I at first thought was ignored - but the problem was that mount found an "Invalid argument" which I only found out when I tried to mount from the command line (SSH)
-
off to my #hammock now! good night !tzaf !fediverse! #tomorrow more struggles with the #NAS? I really want to be able to automate backups, syncs and snapshots! I've made surprisingly little progress so far :(
-
well, I found a little file with a description of my little flash drive (including 'USB1" and its UUID) but I cannot find udev or a script that mounts the drive on USB1 instead of what's in fstab - and IO haven't found an alternative fstab either. time I looked up muy #hammock - I'm not going to make much progress with this any more today... #NAS #confuzzled
-
Damn - I just adapted /etc/fstab on the #NAS to let my little USB thumb appear in a pre-defined thumb drive ... and it has ABSOLUTELY no effect! Maybe there's another fstab in another location? (SSH config files are also in non-standard locations.) !grrr

@mk at last - success! the *beta* app miniDLNA is a UPnP server, minimal installation. And now with VLC the #NAS appears, and (a while later, have to have patience) a '+' appears and it's browsable. Select Arif Sag folder, select play .... AND IT PLAYS! #phew that took a while! (yes @aqueeliz, I'll also look at ownCloud but for now I have my musical collection playable and I'm #happy!).
-
@mk "Choose a device for sound output" HDMI or HDMI - no other choice. WOT Does not match the description! OUT! let's look at the Beta Apps then... #NAS
-
@mk Plex Media Server. Installed. Click on it: "This web page is not available". OK, out with it. What's left? Only iTunes Server. According to teh description that doesn't need a TV or HDMI. #lastresort #NAS
-
@mk XBMC. installs also ASUSTOR Portal which I don't understand what it is for (the page I'm looking at already *is* a portal and the url contains "portal"). XBMC wants an hdmi connection to a TV. I don't have a TV. I *just* want to listen to my music from my computer! :::((( !grrr #NAS
-
@mk !grrr SoundsGood has indexed the collection, but requires Flash for playback. And, once opened, won't close! Out with it. What else? #NAS #ijustwantolistentomymusic
