From a few years back, there is a #P2P #socnet application called #Twister.
I haven’t used it in years, but I do plan to revisit Twister (and #BitMessage) to see what has changed. No timeline for doing so.

I saw someone mention #Bitmessage. “Bitmessage”:{https://wiki.bitmessage.org/Main_Page} was interestingly different when I tried some years ago. I should take another look. It seemed to use a lot of bandwidth and CPU to sustain the network, even when it was days or weeks between actual incoming messages for me / outgoing messages from me.
Also: #Twister. “Twister”:{http://twister.net.co/} is a #P2P microblogging tool. Twister seemed a little complicated to get running, but once I did, it was cool.
Bitmessage seemed to be:
1. Mostly for person-to-person messages, but I don’t recall reading its security & privacy specifics.
2. A little tech-specific, as in not appealing to people who are not into the technology involved
3. Slow to develop ... I’m sure the note about using the updated patched version has been on the website for years.
Twister seemed to be:
1. Mostly for public microblog type posts.
2. I wasn’t really sure whether “following” did much.
3. At the time, it felt like things were actively moving, but I do remember a months-long thread about censorship resistance features that resulted in some contacts abandoning it.

Don’t know when this happened, but #BitMessage had a remote code execution bug that may have been exploited. https://wiki.bitmessage.org/Main_Page
I’ve been wanting to get BitMessage running again ... put the program on a small device that runs little else and just have it running.

I should find out whether #BitMessage and #Twister are still around. Not that I would even remember how to use the same UserIDs that I had when I used those systems.
-
@ajroach42 Some of that sounds like something called #BitMessage. I'm not sure whether that's still around, but it used keys instead of usernames. It is probably not everything you're looking for, but it may be similar enough to give you a starting point.

So I'm not going to completely pull the plug on either #Bitmessage or #Twister yet, but neither one seems to have much personal interaction going on*, so I expect to greatly reduce the time and effort invested in either one.
Twister is full of feed repeaters, but not much actual person-to-person conversation. Meanwhile, it can be months between incoming messages on Bitmessage. Be aware that the !Bitmessage #GNU_Social group broadcast address (BM-2cThQovMpBKcomn5xbLKZdT63CcnmAUC1k) is only functional when my client is connected, which is only intermittently with the current #hotel_inet situation. It is probably a good idea to use the group public address (BM-2cSmr7ACeZ2jVEdXAEHxAgr7jyhv1herKv) instead.
* As observed over a reasonable time period.

let's meet in irc, !twister or !bitmessage ? and you'll get mine, which brings you into the !cjdns system already, with that you can see everything already. Later you can always add more nodes (better always to add people in the near, ofc)

Is !bitmessage getting #PFS (perfect forward security)? https://www.reddit.com/r/bitmessage/comments/2si1rd/is_bitmessage_getting_perfect_forward_security/

relay between #BitMessage + #email https://www.reddit.com/r/bitmessage/comments/2utvh8/email_to_bitmessage_gateway_service_launched_in/

Ideally, you'd have a client/UI and below it several of the existing technologies (A) for distribution: 1. to make #sniffing on the user a little more difficult, 2. enable users with weak devices to #participate. (A) !bitmessage !twister !freenet ... http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Selfhosting

!bitmessage #javascript: basic tests work, dev was fast reachable. let's see more tomorrow: http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Bitmessage_JavaScript_library

@lnxw48 3 weeks later, status: "Encryption key was requested earlier" (same status also on new msg I sent today). Now I know why !bitmessage never really took off here ;-)
-
if you're using !bitmessage would be great when you share some of your stats, thx: http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Bitmessage#traffic_stats
-
depends. but when I send out "some" info, I part the msg and distribute it over several channels (e.g. one of them being !bitmessage). My recipients know how to put those together again.

20 mins of !bitmessage and processed: 3845 person-to-person messages, 389 broadcast msgs, 651 public keys; bandwidth: 17mb download, 7 mb upload

@simsa0 other things an individuum can do is: f.ck on the publicity level of !gs and use 1:1 or 1:few systems (!twister, !bitmessage), there one will also meet like-minded people...
