One of my long-time friends posts all this really sad shit on facebook all the time. I'm not sure if it's a cry for help or a cry for assistance. I tried to get him involved in !fcm but after writing a few http://sportazine.com posts, he was gone. I don't really know how else to help. I don't have any money to give him, and he doesn't seem to really want any advice.
I'm going through a rough patch, but I don't really want to be a social media downer like him. I'd like to think I'd listen to others more than he does anyway.
@snowdriftcoop I may have asked this before, but have you looked at the semester-credit model to get some help on projects? I had some success with it for !fcm
I know there is more to it than this, but I wouldn't be discouraged by lack of comments. We very rarely get comments. Most people put things in podcatcher and don't go to the site.
Unfortunately, it's going to be a while before !fcm can put much effort into helping crowdfund. Have you looked at @snowdriftcoop much as a funding model?
@mv after reflecting on our talk the other day (and some other events), I'm wondering if you've cool letting the !fcm site sit there untouched for a couple of years. Wendy was pushing me to turn things into a business because I wasn't finding anything around here I wanted. I had similar trouble in Baltimore and finally took a couple of things that were ok, but not ideal. I've taken a similar position in Cincy, and I've got some Ampslam money coming each month...which means I can just focus on growth for Sportazine/Music Manumit and don't need to worry about monetizing anything. As such, there isn't a huge need for FCM to be super-active. Plus, there might not be time for it anyway. I still think there's value, but it doesn't seem like "now" is the best time for any of us. I get frustrated thinking about 2 years down the road, but I know the finances will be fine once Wendy decides to stop doing fellowships/residencies (I think she has already ha…
I'm writing out the history of !fcm for Jeff (the guy @mv met that refuses to rejoin the fediverse). It's super-depressing, but maybe rehashing the mistakes of the past will help us avoid them in the future.
@lnxw48 after mostly tossing and turning on the clusterfuck that was yesterday's attempt at a !fcm meeting, I have decided to take myself completely out of the !osp discussion. You tell me what you want to do, and if I can easily help (transfer the domain name, give you some access to the FCM site, etc.), I will do it. Of course, what to do with the FCM site is a matter to be addressed at some point as well. I'm pretty close to just dropping the idea. Too many people involved are in transitional states and/or don't really support free culture (they aren't in the fediverse for example, which makes having conversations about the org really difficult). I thought a similar-style music org might work, but I met lots of resistance when I started that idea a little over two years ago, and had the same problem that twitter is the only place to find everyone. You can't build an org in 140 char. Tom won't use IRC. Ryno won't use facebook. It's just a PIT…
sorry about the technical fails !fcm and !coop. We are going to try again next Tuesday (August 11)...same time, 6PM US ET (3PM US PT). Let me know if you plan on attending next week. That way I can make sure I get you updates. There is a decent chance I will reschedule due to training at work.
Some of you already got a calendar entry with details, but we are going to use appear.in/fcm-coop
I guess I should send to !fcm and !coop that we are having a discussion about US-based coop options at 18h US ET (a little more than 50 minutes from now). We'll be meeting in https://appear.in/fcm-coop.
We'll start with a general talk/QA about the process @snowdriftcoop went through in picking Michigan. I personally know much of the story, but it was told to me before through the lens of non-profits, so I'm excited to come at the issue with a fresh perspective. After that, we'll talk about what Free Culture Media should do: whether we should use a state coop structure, a state benefit structure, or just use an LLC. I don't have a good idea of how long Aaron will want to talk, but you should definitely show up at the beginning if you want the educational bit.
The whole thing is more "private" discussion than presentation, but there's no reason people can't join in. I just want people to know what they are going to get if they decide to join us via webrtc.
Should we alias !fcm as anything else? I assume no one is going to use !freeculturemedia, but I could make it. Is there any reason to keep !netizenfed at either group? Probably now.
