I would argue it illustrates more specifically the dangers of FPTP and two-party politics in general, and an abdication of responsibility in favour or money on the publics part in particular.

Democracy requires an informed electorate and fair and transparent voting systems, and this can be achieved either by excluding 'uninformed' people according to some criteria, or by making a concerted, expensive and public effort to inform the _whole_ population.
