@andstatus you can post to a !group (=all group members) using the ! tag. The post will go to the timetine of all groupmembers.
-
@kuro @morph you need to be a group member to post to that group. Maybe this could be overcome by !group@instance addressing in the future
-
@andstatus Groups are very useful for new GS users.Even people who've just joined and who dont have many subscribers can reach some audience
-
@kuro Sorry, late answer: Yes. To post (and consequentially to forward by replying to another post) to a group you have to be member of it.
-
@mcscx @andstatus Rephrasing it: Groups are one of the big advantages of GS on the user level in favor to Twitter, Diaspora, Pump.io et. al.
-
@vinzv Yet this posting feature was not mentioned on Twitter comptble APi page...
@morph @mcscx

@andstatus I assume because it's not Twitter-compatible. But on the other hand the API documentation is really, really poor in general.
-
@vinzv on the other hand !gnusocial doesn't have centralised hashtags, i.e. clicking #hashtag will only show posts of the poster's instance
-
@mcscx Yes and posts from foreign users known to the user's instance, including Twitter posts if the bridge is/was active.
-
@andstatus maybe #groups are not mentioned in the API page b/c the client doesnt need to know about it.
-
@mcscx Sending to a Group, as you describe it, is very special: you have to tell your application explicitly, who's recipient of such a post. But you cannot find this recipient among message authors in your timelines/message lists.
Having a dedicated "Timeline" for the particular group may give a context (e.g. a group name) to post to the group...

@andstatus On the database of GS groups are treated very similar to users. Maybe that helps?
-
@mcscx Did I understand you correctly about groups in GNU Social, please correct me where I'm wrong:
1. Any user can read group's Timeline, e.g. here: https://status.vinilox.eu/group/gnusocial
2. If some User tries to post to a Group like this: !gnusocial the post will appear in the Group's Timeline only if the User is a "Member" of this group.
3. In order to receive group's messages as part of User's Home (?) Timeline, the User has to "Subscribe" to the Group.
4. To be a "Member" and to "Subscribe" is the same thing. So "Members" and "Subscribers” are synonyms.

@andstatus Exactly, you got all points right.
