Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Friday, 21-Jun-2024 19:41:15 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π @triodug There's a fine line between on the one hand the standing joke "they were roommates!" when people in history were clearly gay but people don't want to see it, and on the other hand allowing men to be vulnerable and physically affectionate with their male friends without reading too much into it. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Friday, 21-Jun-2024 19:41:16 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π A sci-fi author posted a video where he said that the strongest fantasy element of any fantasy movie is the unabashed male camraderie and physical affection, because men in the real world are trained not to hug except when celebrating sports victories.
And I thought whoah there buddy, you must come from the absolute saddest and most traumatic part of the US, because to a Scandinavian all the examples he gave read as people being normal to each other.

Some people will claim everything as gay and some will admit to nothing being gay. No matter where you draw your line you'll have type I and type II errors, false positives and negatives. -

Pawa :wrench: (lss@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Friday, 21-Jun-2024 19:44:42 UTC Pawa :wrench: @clacke @triodug I doubt half the people in history whom you'd call gay actually were, and you're reinforcing the idea you claim to dislike by saying that. How do I know that? Intuition. -
Angry Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 21-Jun-2024 19:53:52 UTC Angry Sun @clacke @triodug I dispute that some of these people were clearly gay, for example it took a long time for whatever Western social processes to decide that men touching, crying, holding hands were not manly. This perception taints even progressives' perception of the past. -
Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π (clacke@libranet.de)'s status on Friday, 21-Jun-2024 19:53:52 UTC Santa Claes πΈπͺππ°π @sun @triodug I mean there are examples of pairs of men or women living as "friends" sharing a bed for decades and never taking an other-sex partner.
They could be just friends obviously, I don't want to commit aro or ace erasure, but I would expect most of those "roommates" to be more than friends and more than platonic.

Same sex attraction and relationships definitely existed before that date but the prevailing norms thru which it was understood and also thru which friendship was understood were totally alien to any modern notions of gender or sexuality as they currently exist. Just because they didn't have a term "homosexual" doesn't mean they didn't have heart palpitations when they saw their partner, or that they didn't kiss and caress each other, or miss they other person's touch when they were away.
