@erebion @clacke @leyrer I run a server that's provided email to ~15 people for >20 years. The answer is if you do everything right with DKIM, SPF, & DMARC, & never allow spam or bulk email or relaying ever, & you are very *very* lucky, you will only have to open a ticket with microsoft to unblock your domain about 3 times a year, and *most* of your users' important email will deliver to gmail users.
It's hell & it's gotten worse. MS & Google don't care about deliverability from small fry.
@clacke @leyrer Actually, I want to find out what's really true. So far sending works, now I just need to implement receiving and change some DNS records.
I'll gladly take advice about common hurdles and pitfalls and also links where people talk about this.
I later want to document how to set it all up in a simple way, without an overly complicated setup.
@leyrer But a guy in a comment thread said it's easy to run your own email server and he never had any issues!

@gnomicutterance @erebion @clacke @leyrer I found this very instructive when I had my first deliverability problem ~10 years ago. They had an ostensibly helpful postmaster contact page, but the first question was how many mails I was trying to deliver. Possible options: 100k, 500k, 1M, or more.
I was like "No, I'm *not* a spammer, I just want to send like three mails a month to someone I know who happens to be your customer."
@henryk @gnomicutterance @clacke @leyrer Digital Markets Act... Now people could just make sure they get a hefty fine.
@leyrer Thanks for bringing attention to this important topic. We need to fight for our rights! β
@gnomicutterance @erebion @clacke @leyrer can confirm. 3 times a year MS blocks for no reason and unblocks when I escalate to my VPS hosting provider.
I am going to just recipercate and bounce all mail I receive from them though.
