   I don't disagree with a lot of this. I think Fosstodon in particular is better than many other places (and I mostly stick to the local timeline), but... I've been thinking about leaving for a while. Still not sure.

     But I've been here for 14 years and with the very rare exception years apart people have been nice to me.
     
     I understand that I'm privileged to be just the right amount of nerd, white, male, abled, etc. Others will not be so lucky and we need to keep figuring out how to make this a good experience for anyone who wants it.
     
     Drew, however, is no less privileged than I am. He was abrasive and people bit back. That's all there is to it in his case. If you go into it for the dopamine hit all you see is the dopamine hit network.

     @satur @pixelherodev Exactly. Twitter optimizes for dopamine and some fedi platforms do so more than others.
     
     My fedi use got much calmer when I switched from Pleroma to Friendica, which focuses on conversations and has a less FOMO-oriented experience.

     @pixelherodev @clacke that's true, but there are ways to reduce this dopamine effect and the fediverse apps are implementing some of them, like hiding follower numbers, protecting toots from being boosted, silencing notifications. And additionally, you can always ask developers to include features you think will improve your user experience.

     @clacke Ehh. I said I agree with Drew's points. That doesn't mean he's the baseline I'm using.

     Whether people are generally nicer than on Twitter (again, *really low bar*) isn't the question; I agree that they are.

     The question is whether the *format* of Twitter is a good one. My answer is very much "no". You're welcome to disagree. Twitter is designed to be a dopamine network. The fediverse copied twitter. Ergo, the fediverse is designed to be a dopamine network.
