"Don't you want the best for your children?" And when families do leave Korean, this is the reason, because they really do want the best for their children, and there's no face-saving way to opt-out.

Depending on how factors are weighed, completely stressing out your child as an investment in their future can be considered rational in the South Korean environment. -

Of course, for South Korean society as a whole, it might be better if parents had two children of decent educational standards and average exam scores, rather than one child of high educational standards and excellent exam scores. And that assumes there's a decent correlation between exam scores and education, something I'd honestly be skeptical about. :/
