what about the conditions mentioned in the questions above? (i.e. hashtagged toot from remote instance that is federating, but not from any user that is followed; toot that is interacted with by remote user who is followed, but not boosted)?

For a post to federate, it needs to have been "seen" by at least one account on your instance (it basically happens when someone follows its author or when a boost makes it appear in a home timeline of someone on your instance ; you can also manually enters the post url in the search engine, after that it will be federated)

suppose kat\@catgirl.social follows bun\@bunnies.club , and does not follow buck\@bunnies.club . nobody at catgirl.social follows Buck at all.
I understand the catgirls.social will show Bun's toots on the federated timeline, but not Buck's, right?
suppose Buck toots something with the hashtag #acab.
- will the federated timeline at catgirls.social show that toot?
- if Kat searches for the hashtag, will it show that toot?
- if Bun likes Buck's toot, will that make catgirls.social know about it?
- if Bun replies to Buck's toot, will that make catgirls.social know about it?
- any more interesting tidbits about which triggers make an instance know about a toot?
