     @Christian Romans called Apples "malus", evil. That's why the Garden of Eden fairy tale is usually illustrated with apples, it's a Latin pun. So Blucifer would be my friend even sooner.

     I was assuming that it's because "apple" was used generically for "fruit" before. That's how we got pineapples and sinapples/appelsins (chinese apples/fruits, e.g. oranges).

     @clacke @Christian Those are thousands of years later coinages, PIE had two similar words which sounded the same in proto-Latin, but also they didn't like apples (the kind they had access to). Naranj (orange) they copied from Persian. What's weird is other Romance languages have new words for apple, pomme or manzana. Pun only works in Latin.
