Yeah. Community still isn't working well and we could surely do with better a groups system. What if someone wanted to join sunbeam's mission but already has a perfectly servicable instance of their own. Why can't I subscribe to Sunbeam's timelines from outside, say?

Each server is its own community, but I don't feel the pressure to choose a single server to be my "home" server like I do in the fediverse.
It is a paid feature that I refuse to pay for, but I can even construct an entirely unique facade per server if needed (though it is impossible to be 100% pseudonymous due to the user id being visible)

Even OStatus did it in an RFC822-like manner. I don't know why AP dropped that.

Do we want to chat upon the topic of #ActivityPub2/#Mastodev/#Pleroma?
ideally via Mumble/Jitsi or something. My toots auto-delete after 1w which means the Masto toot chain broke (bad protocol implementation ; RFC 822 does chaining a lot better)

If we wanted to, we could make a mastodon client that made alts work more like Discord and made each alt feel like part of separate communities.
I'm not sure if that is worth doing or not.

(2008) OpenMicroBlogging was ActivityStreams 1 (I think!) over XMPP. This led to OStatus.
(2009) OStatus was ActivityStreams 1 over Atom/WebSub/Salmon. This led to the pump.io protocol.
(2012) The pump.io protocol was ActivityStreams 1 over a purpose-made JSON protocol. This was updated and standardized as ActivityPub.
(2018) ActivityPub is ActivityStreams 2 over a purpose-made JSON protocol.

You're telling me AP has something to do with OStatus? Then why is it AP2 and not OStatus3?

Nothing in the protocol ties mentions in the text to actual recipients in the payload; That's a platform convention, and even StatusNet itself was inconsistent between releases on whether mentions were explicit by default or not.
