When it does federate I'm assuming it'll be over Matrix. I think Mattermost is heading there too.

I am currently listening to an interview with a Mattermost founder and yeah it's kind of interesting and partly inspiring but also disappointing and soulless, flippant and extractive.
Very very open source as opposed to free software or cooperative technology.
