what can you do with a computer besides re-implement all the stuff that's already on it

Izzy Swart (syntacticsugarglider@merveilles.town)'s status on Saturday, 05-Mar-2022 04:37:58 UTC Izzy Swart @eris @inscript i more or less only care about the class of systems that i'm currently unable to contentfully reason about. there are "practical" problems to solve in computing, but only as given by an ontology that assumes the necessity of the domains in which those problems exist. & escaping sufficiently from technoprogressivism makes it readily apparent that those needs aren't so self-evident, to put it mildly

Izzy Swart (syntacticsugarglider@merveilles.town)'s status on Saturday, 05-Mar-2022 04:37:59 UTC Izzy Swart @eris @inscript i think about computing being interesting more or less solely in its capacity to exteriorize like, analogical processes of thought. a library of abstract combinators over semantics embedded in silico, & can use those in same way as cognitive patternicity to explore novelty & implication. i suppose this is what Kay talk(ed/s) about... society w/ aid of computation, as mediated by computation is more variant than society mediated by language, & equally unimaginable from without

and like. it just seems like the reason i use computers is because i have to?
there's nothing here for me

it's whats leading to my doubts over computers as a tool and computation as a medium

eris (eris@merveilles.town)'s status on Saturday, 05-Mar-2022 04:38:04 UTC eris @inscript it's like, "wow i dislike all of the things we use computers for, lets make a computer that lacks these things" and then i dont have anything left

inscript (inscript@merveilles.town)'s status on Saturday, 05-Mar-2022 04:38:05 UTC inscript When I think about the possibilities of computing, I have a hard time thinking outside of the handful of office apps, games, and a/v software. This isn't a dig at people who are doing that, more so just that I can't even imagine what's possible with a computer besides Windows 95-type stuff. Applications are boring, but so is "strap this monitor to your head". Stuff like Dynamicland is cool (amazing actually), but they mostly just use new interfaces with the same old abstractions.

eris (eris@merveilles.town)'s status on Saturday, 05-Mar-2022 04:41:55 UTC eris @inscript does this make my objection to computers as opposed to things that do computation

And how are you going to get new music? Go out and buy a CD?

eris (eris@merveilles.town)'s status on Monday, 28-Mar-2022 10:21:17 UTC eris @inscript one of the biggest things that i can't sacrifice is music but like, i dont need something revolutionary or new or innovative to do music, i need my mp3 player on the desk beside me.
chat apps just let me talk to people that i should be talking to in person, and i prefer books to pdfs
