     @aral @yarmo I still adhere to the notion that the best way to get corporations to stop reinventing the wheel poorly is to write good software with no strings attached
     
     (also corporations are people, which is sad but true)

     I love poking people about this, but the fear is overblown. We've had like 27 years of BSD licensed software (since original BSD 4.4 release) and I can only think of maybe a max of 10 Silicon Valley companies that "took the code and got rich off it, giving nothing back" but I can think of a considerably higher number that actually contribute back changes because it's in their best interests financially to not have to constantly chase upstream changes

     @feld @yarmo Indeed. And yet it is used for so many purposes other than freedom (for people). Permissively-licensed open source is first and foremost corporate in nature. Not saying it doesn’t have its place (small libraries etc.) but I’d personally want to protect a whole service like this that’s primarily built to empower people not corporations.

     One question: why MIT and not AGPL? Would you be cool with it if startup X took the code, invested $5M and closed it off/didn’t share their improvements?

     @feld @yarmo Happy New Year to you too. What exactly about what I said is fear mongering? It’s exactly what MIT allows and it’s exactly why MIT is the darling of Big Tech and Silicon Valley.

     @aral @feld @yarmo I think @jbauer makes a lot of good points in his blog post about how copyleft licenses seriously fail in their stated goal of empowering users. I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on it.
