sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 09:50:05 UTC sazius on Mayfirst Looking at IndieWeb and the IndieMark. IndieAuth is pretty interesting: https://indieauth.com/. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 10:02:10 UTC sazius on Mayfirst Cool, I just logged in to indieauth.com using my own domain and FreeOTP on my phone. (They say to use Google Authenticator, but that's proprietary these days.) -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 10:40:50 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm it's easier than you might think: https://indieauth.com/setup -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 10:54:33 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm Another option is if you are able to edit the metadata in the HTML header (the <head> tag). My site is static so it was easier :-) -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 10:57:30 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm actually I'm surprised there isn't already a wordpress plugin for it... -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 11:01:44 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm I found this one: https://wordpress.org/plugins/indieauth/ - but I think that's for logging in once you have it set up (on any site). -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 11:03:05 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm this post looks useful: http://andysylvester.com/2014/01/21/first-steps-in-using-indieauth/ -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 11:04:02 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm And this link has many suggestions: https://indiewebcamp.com/WordPress#IndieAuth -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 12:34:35 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm Hmm... I have to admit I'm not sure how to log in. I can't see any login fields. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 12:59:10 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius me too! Just set it up. Not sure how many sites will let me use it though. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:05:41 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm Doesn't seem to be, just asks for email and name as usual... -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:07:18 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp if you add these lines you can use it on sites that work with OpenID: https://indiewebcamp.com/IndieAuth#Use_IndieAuth_for_your_OpenID -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:10:06 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius done! now to find an OpenID site... -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:11:39 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp You mean like GNU social? :-) -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:13:00 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp or you can report bugs in Pumpa: https://pumpa.branchable.com/ :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:13:19 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius well yeah but I already have a GNU social account. If I login to fragdev with my domain won't it create a new account? -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:16:10 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp I think you can first log in normally, and then go to Settings > OpenID and link your new OpenID to your existing account. I'll test this right now... :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:20:31 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius okay I just added my OpenID to my profile on the new social. Next I suppose is to try to login with it! -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:23:47 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Yeah, I just did. It worked. Now I have a new, more complex, way to log in to my GNU social account. Yay :-) -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:24:37 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm Perhaps the login is for administrating the site, posting new blog posts etc.? -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:25:34 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius worked for me too, but strangely took me to Twitter to authorize app again even though I had already done this -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:27:34 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Yeah, weird. I'm using the FreeOTP app on android, but I have to reauthenticate as well each time. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:33:15 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm Yeah, it would seem useful for commenting too. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:33:44 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm BTW I had to look up that idiom :-) (I'm not a native speaker of English) http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/old_college_try -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:49:57 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius and zotero.org supports OpenID login! -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 13:56:25 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm But that's in computer science not English :-) Anyway, it's always fun with new idioms! -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:00:06 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Nice. Strangely I didn't know about Zotero before. I'd definitely need a solution like that. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:02:17 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp wow, and it appears to be free software, NOW I'm interested :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:19:53 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius yep Zotero is one of the reference managers I always introduce to my graduate students in the research and bibliography class I teach. One of the students this year really took to it, but the rest of them preferred MyEndnoteWeb. I like Zotero because it supports BibTeX and is free software. Has social features, plugins for LibreOffice etc. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:20:03 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jrm Heh, well, thanks :-) I know the English of my scientific field well, but outside of that I sometimes have problems. Like names of things in the kitchen, or animals etc :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:20:54 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius check your repos I bet Zotero is in there. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:21:58 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp A colleague of mine has been suggesting Mendeley but I've resisted it since its proprietary. But Zotero looks perfect for me :-) BibTeX support is a must. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:22:25 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius the other pre software reference managers I use our Mendeley and JabRef. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:23:29 UTC Jon Kulp @jonkulp whoops is Mendeley proprietary? I thought I installed it with an apt get command... I hardly ever use it but keep it in my list of reference managers so that my students have a choice -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:23:57 UTC Jon Kulp @jonkulp wow big speech recognition #fail! -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:26:16 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius by the way my student who liked Zotero so much also showed me an Android app where you can use your barcode scanner to scan the ISBN barcode on the back of a book and add it to your Zotero library. Pretty slick. -
Temporary Marjolein (mk@oracle.skilledtests.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:44:51 UTC Temporary Marjolein @jonkulp #Zotero sounds quite interesting! Maybe I can use this for background research for my photography. (Btw, spell checker suggests 'Zorro' here ;-)) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:46:32 UTC Jon Kulp @jonkulp @sazius okay I guess Mendeley is not free software, but it does have a Linux desktop version. Maybe that's why I thought it was free. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:48:08 UTC Jon Kulp @mk it's a very good, robust Reference Manager. If you don't need cloud support then JabRef is also good. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 14:59:52 UTC Jon Kulp @jonkulp @sazius Mendeley desktop is really nice. I have not had it installed for a while but I just reinstalled using the .deb package from their website and it works great. Too bad it's not FOSS. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:14:03 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Oh, that sounds cool. Hmm... I wonder if it will work with my thesis :-) I need to test it when I get home. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:15:32 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Yeah, proprietary is a no-go for me, especially if it's something I'm going to be very reliant on. -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:17:55 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius what are (did) you using to write your thesis? -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:20:08 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Basically just a huge BibTeX file, then I pasted the references into my document until I had time to write the section :-) I collected some PDFs in a folder, but I usually ended up searching them again online instead of digging in my folder :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:21:50 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius so LaTeX plus BibTeX? -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:23:36 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Ah, yes. Sorry, I though you meant how I "organised" references for my thesis. Yes, LaTeX + BibTeX, all in Emacs of course (auctex mode). -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:25:00 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius with a separate .bib file storing all refs? -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:27:10 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp correct. Our research group maintains a common .bib file with references (in CVS, gasp!). If I'm referring to something that we've referred to before I can just use it from there. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:28:17 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Actually I might have had 2-3 .bib files altogether. I kept some references separate from the groups' common file. Others I added there. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:29:12 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @theru naturally :-) -
Jon Kulp (jonkulp@micro.fragdev.com)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:37:08 UTC Jon Kulp @sazius gotcha. Sounds like something that would work fine. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Thursday, 25-Dec-2014 15:39:45 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @jonkulp Yeah, but it's completely unstructured. Also I'd like to keep the PDFs too etc. So I've been looking for some organising app. I'll take a look at Zotero and JabRef when I get back to work. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Friday, 26-Dec-2014 08:57:28 UTC sazius on Mayfirst I got the bad token page as well, then it worked. Not sure why :-) You can use FreeOTP instead of Google Authenticator. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Friday, 26-Dec-2014 16:53:09 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @benfell it wasn't mentioned as an option but it's a free software equivalent of Google authenticator (implements same protocol), I tried and it works with IndieAuth. Available in the F-droid store. -
sazius on Mayfirst (saziusmayfirst@social.mayfirst.org)'s status on Friday, 26-Dec-2014 22:17:00 UTC sazius on Mayfirst @benfell I think they had a link or instructions for Google auth., just follow those, but use the FreeOTP app instead :-)
