Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Thursday, 07-Jun-2018 13:32:21 UTC Hallå Kitteh @kensanata @steckerhalter It's not a Germanism. The word has acquired several meanings over the centuries, and "being the origin of something" is the ... original meaning.
"Original" being a synonym of "novel" I suspect is over a century old, but still far newer than the "being the point of origin", which I suspect is at least as old as Middle English and coming from Old French.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/original agrees on the ... origin, but doesn't specify when the other meanings appeared. -
