   Some underappreciated factors in Mastodon's success is its ease of installation, the comparable ease compared to even ten years ago of buying domains and hosting; increase in technical competency among the educated population.
   
   People with little technical skills but can follow instructions seem to be able to install a Mastodon instance. It is much more difficult and error-fraught to install gnu social.
   
   I cannot comment on Pleroma as I have not installed it yet.

     @deadsuperhero @moonman Absolutely. Evan's main reason for writing GS in PHP was for people to be able to host it in places with limited functionality apart from PHP.
     
     For pump he used node, as he figured this was no longer a factor.
