That text is what people see most of the time, so hiding part of the webby is a mistake. It was a mistake when Identica did it (leading to one super-node whose users had little understanding that they could use other nodes and how to interact with such nodes). Federation is the strength of our network. Our projects should put that front and center, where everyone will see it. https://nu.federati.net/attachment/17236 Hallå Kitteh likes this.Hallå Kitteh repeated this. -
Eugen 🎄 (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 02-Apr-2017 20:36:18 UTC Eugen 🎄 @lnxw48a1 Right, the problem is that displaying the long, unwieldy handles in text (making it less readable) will make people prefer staying on the same instance as everybody. And if you force writing the local domain too, people will just leave, because that'd be too annoying.

I've observed the same mistake and its effects repeatedly since sometime in 2008. I'm hoping at least one project finds a way to benefit from hindsight.
