Although to add on to XMPP - with XEP-0060 pubsub can be used to create a social network, blog, etc (I.E: https://movim.eu where XMPP is a backend to a federated social network) Matrix has a fantastic idea, and I love that it uses JSON because it is so much easier to use than xml imo. I believe that OStatus needs more work too, or current implementations of it are just not working properly (Like friendica or GNUSocial as an example where OStatus works, but is also kinda broken)
