A folded piece of notebook paper pulled from a spiral notebook. It is several years old and yellowing. A child has tried to write "John McNees" in red pen at the bottom of the page. But there are misspellings – "John" has become "Johoht" and the "M" in "McNees" was been written upside-down as a "W."

Anyway, a few years ago I pulled it from the shelf to thumb through, and some pieces of faded notebook paper fell out.
They were pages where my uncle – probably when he was about six years old – had been learning to write his name and numbers.
