@chris__martin that is the popular plot right now. Because it is wish fulfillment during times of deep feelings of powerlessness.
Older novels have plots where people have to deal with things outside of their control. Moby Dick is a good example

They are like the pencils of coding. Many times a pencil sketch is good enough. Sometimes you need CAD diagrams. Claiming that CAD is superior to a pencil is strange because they are both used for different purposes. -

Today, thanks to tech influencers, we have overly complicated systems. Complexity is chosen over simplicity as a flex. Then they call their Rube Goldberg machines "best practices."
The double influence math and of limited resources led to the creation of beautiful, simple systems from the 1950s to the 90s. Powerful machines and the weaker influence of math give us our modern fad driven development.

The usability problem was solved with GUIs, back in the 80s.
I have seen complexity increase in software development in the last 10 years. People who used Delphi or similar tools told me 10 years ago how we were making things more complicated back then.
So much that it can be a business advantage if a business adopts tools that encourage simplicity in code and architecture.

Yes, I agree. We don't understand mental illness, and this bothers us. We fear lack of explanation and control. Mental health is something that scares us because it breaks the illusion of our agency.
We can choose to be empathetic. Yet empathy requires the courage to imagine yourself as a person with mental health problems, and accepting that under the right circumstances, that can be you.
