bsmall2 (bsmall2@quit.im)'s status on Sunday, 05-Nov-2017 08:58:54 UTC bsmall2 In 2014, I think I was just completing my transition to free software (gnu/Linux with Shotwell, Gimp, emacs, Inkscape...). I played with Fotowall for a while. I ended up not using the Fotowall collage application and moving to ImageMagick in emacs's *shell*.. Maybe I should try Fotowall again, but lately I just take the most interesting rectangle out of a big photo, or montage a few pictures together to suggest a story or show different views of a place. I had a chance to visit Toroku in January this year. It feels important to see the same place in different seasons, at different times of the day. -

The farming people in this valley were not wealthy but they did ok with wild bee honey, shiitake mushrooms, ricefields, and livestock. But all those relatively healthy activities declined once some people tried to profit from arsenic mining and smelting. After the honey and shiitake mushrooms stopped cooperating livestock and people started getting sick too. Nothing in the village was able to flower, except for wild pear trees. One of arsenic-damaged old ladies was asked to sell this tree to an old man. He wanted to chop it into firewood to heat his bath. The old lady refused to sell this tree, saying that its leaves, flowers, and fruit would return after they stopped the smelting an mining... JuRenJiGaki 十連寺柿 -

Thousands of people came to have a great time with a lot of organic vegetables, healthy food from around the world and fun things for the kids to do. There was no need to waste billions of dollars on gimmicky resorts and destructive golf courses for a Sea Gaia. You just need a nice, big park like Florante... -
