I think they are setting up a light nato, but remember its still not nato membership wich Ukraine will never get, unless world war 3 and nukes

But you also say that the war will drag on for a very long time and this will eventually work like a cold war, unless ofc Ukraine manage to succed escalating to a point were Russia will become very serious, remember they are showing restraith cause they do want oeace, but they want conditions that are closer to the reality of the battlefield

it means instead of only using 8% of its airforce then it could more and join the escalation with perhaps even using the same cluster bombs Ukraine has recieved which Russia is not using, it could mean many other things that Russia has stayed away from because they Want peace and de-escalation, it is the west and in particular Ukraine who is trying to escalate very hard with longer range missiles that could hit moscow in matter of 5 min
