I don't think the article controls very well for anything. In particular, in both China and Italy, the overwhelming majority of reported infections have happened in a single region of the country, so "19 days past the 100th case" of #2019-nCoV means something quite different when most of the cases are in a single subregion of a country than when they are fairly well spread out. It is much easier for a given number of cases to overwhelm the medical capacity of a single region than it is to overwhelm the entire country. (And overwhelming an area's medical capacity, according to "flatten the curve", makes all the difference.)

If anything, Durden makes a case he did not argue: that the pattern of (known) #COVID-19 infections in the #USA is different enough that the country's experience should not be compared to either #China or #Italy.

@pla Agreed. We only watched from the second half, but if the #VAR hadn't been there, #ENG second goal would have been allowed, and that penalty would not have been awarded, which would have been fairer. Having said that #USA deserved that win with all the chances that #ENG missed out on, and that penalty was rather pitiful.
I am gutted that #ENG were knocked out of the competition, but there is still the playoff.

Yes, the United States is slaughtering civilians by the thousands in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, and there is something ridiculously hypocritical about professing standards that prevent selling weapons to a government that uses them to kill civilians. No, there is no proper moral way to conduct the campaigns of mass-murder known as wars, so that worthy recipients of war weapons can be distinguished from Saudi Arabia and other unworthy ones. But when we have a chance to alleviate great suffering, we must act on it immediately. We have that chance. After May 26, U.S. Congress Members and Senators will be home for a week, where they should hear from their constituents in person.
