Travel reimbursement may not get filed tonight (very tired and itchy tonight ... I probably should take some diphenhydramine, but I don’t have any here).
Article’s point is not supported by data, neither is the pollies’ point.
According to an #NPR broadcast last night, 40% of failed generation capacity was solar and wind and 60% was gas / oil / coal / nuclear ... but renewables are less than 40% of the total capacity. That means renewable sources failed at a higher proportion than other sources.
But either way, *every* generation source had its own failures, and this doesn’t even count the inevitable downed power transmission lines due to ice.
#Texas needs to take this opportunity to focus their attention on making their generation and transmission grid more reliable in every area.
(And frankly, I think #California could also benefit from learning this and responding appropriately, as our homes are also thinly insulated, and Cal-ISO already struggles during high demand days.)
Also, according to Politico, #Trump won in #FL, #IA, #OH. #Biden won in #MN, #NH. Maine and Nebraska allocate electoral votes by congressional district. In #ME, one of the two districts went for Biden (the other is not yet projected). In #NE, two of three districts went for Trump.
No results yet for #GA, #NV, #PA, #MI, #TX, WI, #NC.
Looking at the map, it seems that the highest per capita death zones are in the Northeast and a sweep across the South from #TX eastward. @clacke recently posted some graphics with similar statistics for European nations and their subdivisions. I’ll link his posts into this thread.
Remember, raw numbers are deceptive. The United States is the 3rd most populous nation on the planet. If we don’t look at some population-adjusted numbers, we’ll believe the country is doing far worse relative to other nations than it actually is.
It's that time again. We are looking for regional judges for the Creative Commons Community Music Awards. Please let me know if you would be interested in taking a region.
The regions we have available are as follows (two regions are already taken): Mid-West - #ND, #SD, #NE, #KS, #MO, #IA, #MN, #WI, #IL, #IN, #MI, #OH Southwest - #OK, #TX, #NM, #AZ
In the future, we would love to break the regions up more, but having smaller regions this year has proved unmanageable. How much of that is due to covid? Who knows.
I have been told in the past that once-a-day posts are fine but any more than that gets tiresome. I doubt I will post daily, but if I post about this too much, please let me know!

In the Atlantic / Gulf of Mexico, #Hurricane #Laura is a category 4 storm, expected to bring storm surge up to 20 feet above normally-dry ground. Still expected to reach the #TX / #LA shore this evening. Still rated "extremely dangerous".
This isn't #TheWeatherChannel saying this (e.g., there's no commercial motivation). This is #NOAA / #NHC.
#TropStorm #Marco is starting to break apart as it makes landfall in #LA. Expected to become post-tropical depression by late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
TS #Laura expected to become a hurricane tomorrow, head for #TX or LA, with landfall Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.
#TropStorm #Laura is over and West of Hispaniola ( #Haiti and #DR ), expected to go over #Cuba before entering the Gulf tomorrow night / Tuesday morning and becoming a hurricane itself. Looks like it may hit near the Texas - Louisiana state border on Wednesday night or Thursday morning.
As always, these forecasts are based on mathematical models, and real-world situations almost always differ from models. If you're in the US Southeast or the Gulf Coast, you should take precautions as though one or both storms could change course and visit you.
