I love #Mastodon so much. Last night I posted an #introduction on a whim, just to say hello.

I expected to be ignored just like I have been so many times on #twitter (refuse to call the #birdsite "X", ugh).

I woke up to numerous #boost notifications and new followers. Wow.

A place to actually connect.

#Twitter vs #Mastodon

Twitter is like a top of the range Lamborghini but you’re trapped in the boot full of broken bottles and it’s being driven over a cliff by a madman.

Mastodon is like sitting in the back of a dilapidated VW camper van, with knackered suspension, no air conditioning, but lots of nice passengers having a sing-song and there’s a dog called Mr. Snuffles.

Last night I shared two posts. The first was positive (Fred Rogers) & the second was abysmal (normalized gun violence).

On #Twitter, I suspect the latter would have garnered far more attention bc a race for publicly visible RTs, likes & follows favors promoting shock & outrage.

But here on #Mastodon, Mister Rogers wisdom was shared more widely.

This isn’t a scientific analysis but a mere observation reinforcing that social media will be what we make it. And I like this neighborhood.

@davidrevoy So you predict that X will die. I think Musk by making weird changes and rebranding will just kill off Twitter. It may end up as it was with Google+ (whose functionality I liked), or it will remain just a medium for militant politicians, which also means the end.

Twitter’s new X logo wasn’t made by an in-house designer. It’s from an old podcast hosted by one of the cult that Elon took from his replies.

The font is Monotype’s Special Alphabets 4. Who wants to bet Musk didn’t pay for the rights before slapping it all over the place?

I’m finding so many interesting posts & links about #science & #history on #Mastodon.

It’s not that this kind of content wasn’t on #Twitter, but it got lost in a sea of outrage in my feed, which was organized by algorithms, promoted tweets & ads.

The lack of those algorithms & a new chance to curate an intentional list of follows has certainly helped too. So I’m really enjoying interactions here & learning a bit along the way. (It is the Internet, so always check the sources of course!)

I tried to explain what drove a reporter like me to quit #Twitter (even if it’s temporary) after years and years of thriving on the site.
