@snowdusk_ Apple vs Google on privacy: a tale of absolute competitive advantage
https://2018.ar.al/notes/apple-vs-google-on-privacy-a-tale-of-absolute-competitive-advantage/
TL;DR Apple willingly giving up its absolute competitive advantage in privacy over Google would be as daft as Samson shaving his head every morning.
That said, the long term alternatives are p2p, e2e-encrypted, and free stack (software, hardware, and services).
#Briar is an unusual kind of messenger for Android devices: there are no servers, messages are stored on your phone and sent directly to your contact's phone through TOR, wi-fi or bluetooth.
It's designed for journalists, activists, people working in disaster zones and anyone interested in "off the grid" communication.
The official site is here:
The app is free, open source and available through @fdroidorg and Google Play.
Do you know any non-techies who are concerned about #Facebook / #Google / #Windows invading their #privacy?
Do they want nice user-friendly and privacy-friendly #alternatives, but don't think there are any?
Try sending them this link:
Switching.social is an extremely easy-to-use site, and it only links to sites and apps that are also easy-to-use as well as privacy-conscious.

Decentralize your world.
There is of course #mastodon as federated social media.
There is good old #email as federated postbox (as long as not everyone uses GMail).
There is #peertube as a federated video platform.
There is #Riot / Matrix.org as federated group messaging.
There is #XMPP for federated 1on1 messaging.
And there is #nextcloud as federated cloud storage.
In theory most services are already federated. We only miss more users :)
Hi there! I'm Maslow, I work in software/electrical engineering on satellites and am a bisexual lady.
I'm really interested in #dat, #ipfs, #ssb, #meshnetworks, #socialjustice, and #privacy.
I love my big, floofy dog, and currently live in Washington, DC.

Just in case you wondered why you're here on #Mastodon:
"Facebook patent application describes spying on users through their webcams"

Here's a prime example of Google's invasion of privacy:
Family vacation coming up and I'm emailed the details as an attached Word document. Nothing in the email itself or anywhere else.
Google take it upon themselves without my permission to not only add the vacation to my calendar, but also the hotel I'm staying at and with whom.
All this done automatically by way of scanning personal communication.
Is it 'convenient'? Perhaps, but consider the implications.
In the #uk there are new secret laws being passed (yes, secretly) which effectively make #privacy a crime. #encryption must have back doors.
