who do you trust more with your privacy and personal data?
Apple or Google?
"Neither" is not allowed 😝 I'm curious as to which one is more trusted

@snowdusk_ Google, because I know they're going to exploit every byte I give them. Apple still insists otherwise.
@snowdusk_ I don't use Apple products so I'm only judging them externally but their attitude towards data privacy seems great, their track record on data siphoning bugs and flaws is worrisome though. The weaknesses in the permissions system on the App Store is troubling.
Therefore I'd go with Google. I always feel like I know where I stand with Google - what data they collect, what they use it for, and give me easy access to control that data.
@snowdusk_ Apple vs Google on privacy: a tale of absolute competitive advantage

TL;DR Apple willingly giving up its absolute competitive advantage in privacy over Google would be as daft as Samson shaving his head every morning.
That said, the long term alternatives are p2p, e2e-encrypted, and free stack (software, hardware, and services).
@aral LOVE THE ARTICLE!!! Thank you! 👏👏👏
@snowdusk_ I trust neither. But since I have to pick one. Apple is the lesser of the two evils in this regard imo. Although they aren’t ethical at all in regards to overseas child labor exploitation!
@snowdusk_, Apple for the same reasons others have said. Their business model is built around selling products to their users, while Google’s business model is selling their users’ information to companies.
@starbreaker @snowdusk_ Agree. Lesser of two evils. Plus, Apple stuff is priced above my budget.
@snowdusk_ yeah, Apple seems be be making a go out of just taking your money directly rather than trying to find sneaky ways to monetize you. Deploying things like encryption, sane browser behavior and USB ports that shut down to thwart law enforcement overreach.
I’m extracting myself from Google’s ecosystem but that doesn’t mean I’m blindly moving to iCloud et al. I’m actually replacing things like online storage with encrypted usb drives and streaming music with local MP3s.

Apple makes 99% of its revenue by selling products and services to people, and almost zero with advertising.
Google makes 99% of its revenue thanks to tracking and behavioral advertising. And Alphabet (its parent company) also makes money by selling technology to the Army, to bomb innocent people in the Middle East...
And as Sean said, protecting people's privacy is a competitive advantage for Apple...
I use Fregal at the library website to download free and legal mp3s every week. They have a wishlist so I can cue up an album and get the whole thing over a few weeks. Doesn't take long before I've got more than I have time to listen to.
I also use the Live Music Archive to download concerts. I actually like the live music more than the studio recordings.
Only occasionally do I have to put up with Spotify ads. Like John Coltrane's lost album.
Thanks

I cannot find a more recent graph that I saw (maybe it's even in my feed from a couple of months ago), but here you can find out the difference :)
