@pluralistic thank you for sharing this talk, and thank you @mako for giving it in the first place.
I find it one of the most articulate comparisons between #OpenSource and #FreeSoftware. It really articulately explains the intuitive difference in feeling between using open source and free software projects.
A bunch of comments requested an explanation on #Linux graphics drivers, so I decided to take a look at the topic, and explain Mesa, kernel drivers, the Nvidia drivers (Nouveau, NVK, the official #opensource modules, and the proprietary driver), as well as AMD drivers (with RadeonSI, RADV, AMDVLK and AMDGPU, plus AMDGPU-Pro), and Intel drivers (with i915, i965, ANV and the new Xe driver).
@jsbarretto That's true, but I bet there are also a lot of people who don't feel similarly and thus are not reacting to this post. Obviously I can only guess at the real numbers, but I would imagine that among programmers (or writers, organizers, etc) who have worked on #opensource projects, only a small fraction of them have had a meaningful impact on the world through those contributions.
Iām listening to this episode of @changelog on #OpenTF and Iām increasingly convinced that any type of tech infrastructure has to be and remain #OpenSource. The unsolved problem does remain funding these projects. Often the model is either large corp backing or VC funding. The latter may well just set expectations too high in terms on ROI. https://overcast.fm/+HZUd4r73M
Today, I offer something a bit different: a plunge into the 70s, 80s and 90s as we look at how #Linux replaced #Unix as the biggest operating system in the world.
How did a scrappy little #OpenSource clone manage to replace an installed, commercial powerhouse people learned in Universities, and why wasn't #BSD chosen instead?
