#OnThisDay, 6 Sept 2013, American Marin Alsop becomes the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in London.

The Promenades (“Proms”) were established in 1895 to encourage a love of orchestral music. Since 1927, the BBC have organised and broadcast the concerts. The last night of the proms is the most high profile concert, with a lot of flag-waving and singing along.

#OnThisDay, 13 Aug 2014, Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani won the Fields Medal for her work on complex geometry. She was the first woman to win it since it began in 1936.

She died in 2017, aged just 40. Multiple awards and initiatives are named after her.

#OnThisDay, 20 Apr 1902, Marie and Pierre Curie refine radium chlorine. The discovery leads to Marie being the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903.

The Academy originally planned to award only Pierre and Henri Becquerel. Pierre insisted that Marie should also be included.

#OnThisDay, 13 Jan 1976, Sarah Caldwell takes up the baton at the New York Met Opera, becoming the first woman to conduct an opera there.

#OnThisDay, 7 Jan 1939, French physicist Marguerite Perey discovers element 87, which she later names francium. It was the last element to be discovered naturally.

Perey was a student of Marie Curie, and was nominated five times for the Nobel Prize but never received it.
